Pin-up Photography

Modern pin up is undergoing a surge in popularity and this popular style is alive and well! The term pin up refers to both an illustrative and photographic style intended for informal display, e.g. meant to be "pinned-up" on a wall. Pin-up girls may be glamour models, fashion models, and actresses, but in general the female form is emphasised and playful sexuality played up.

The term pin-up was first attested to in English in 1941; however, the practice is documented back at least to the 1890s. The genre became particularly popular in the 20th century and became wildly popular during World War II and well into the 1960s. Pin-up images could be cut out of magazines or newspapers, or be from postcard or chromo-lithographs etc.  Photos would also appear in calendars, which were also pinned up on walls. Later, posters of pin-up girls were mass-produced and became an instant hit.

Many pin-ups photographs were of celebrities who were considered sex symbols. One of the most popular early pin-up girls was Betty Grable. Her poster was ubiquitous in the lockers of G.I.'s during World War II. Pin-ups were often illustrations showing idealised versions of what (some thought) a particularly beautiful or attractive woman should look like. Examples of this type include the Gibson girl, drawn by Charles Dana Gibson. The genre also gave rise to several well-known artists specialising in pin-up, including Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren, and George Petty. Notable contemporary pin-up artists include Elias Chatzoudis, Armando Huerta, Chuck Bauman and popular Pin-Up Artist Olivia De Berardinis, whose pin-up art of Betty Page and his featured Playboy artwork brought widespread recognition.

Despite changes to modern values and social norms, pin up is popular once again. The fashion, humour and appealing sexuality of the pin up girl remains, often taking a modern twist and direction. Models such as Dita Von Teese are well known as a modern day pin-up girls, who have not only sparked a reinvention of the burlesques scene, but inspired a number of sexy modern pin-up girls. Photographer such as Danielle Bedics, Viva Van Story, Manny Rego, Roy Varga, Hampton Van Meter and Mehosh Dziadzio are just a few creating wonderful modern pin-up images.

A modern pin-up photographer that I am a huge fan of is Robert Alvarado. He combines colour, form, and style to create an allure that captivates. The influence of pin-up photography pioneers like Vargas and Elvgren is clear, but his modern approach to this classic form is evident and impressive. Alvarado composes pin-ups with models in traditional and modern poses, in clothes, lingerie, or tastefully nude, looking directly at the camera.

The pin up pose is one of the most important aspects of the look. Clothes that accentuate a pin up girl's curves and femininity are just the start and the poses add to this. Classic pin up poses, such as the overt bending and the straight extending of legs play up sexuality in an often humours way. The often playful and cheeky facial expressions complete the pin up look.
